Friday March 9 – More Choice and Control – NSW family stories of creating inclusive lives Ryde/ Eastwood Leagues Club.
Come and hear how some NSW families have taken the initiative to build an inclusive life for their family member that reflects their real interests, aspirations and the joy of belonging and contributing to their community.
There is much talk in the NSW disability sector about people with disability and their families having more choice and control over their lives. Beyond the jargon, however, what does it all really mean? Resourcing Families will bring together parents and other family members from around NSW already leading the way with an individualised or self-directed approach for their son, daughter or sibling. It is their hope that by sharing their story, they will inspire others to have the confidence to dream big, support a person with disability to lead a full and meaningful life and get started now with what is potentially already available.
Sometimes the best insight into what could be possible is to hear a true life story!
A range of topics relevant to taking the lead, directing supports and maximising choices and possibilities will be shared.

April 2-5 – Circles of Support – All you need to know to get started and keep going! Nowra (April 2) – Wollongong (April 3)- South Hurstville (April 4) – Harbord (April 5)
Resourcing Families is running a practical workshop for families about the ‘how to’ of setting-up, running and maintaining a circle of support. Circles of support are an effective strategy for getting more people involved in the life of a person with disability to support them in their life goals and to have a lifestyle suited to them. This can be an enriching and empowering opportunity, as well as an important strategy for keeping people safe into the future.
Questions for discussion will include:
What is a circle of support? How might you get started? Who should you invite to be part of the circle? How would you issue an invitation? What preparation is involved? What could happen at the first meeting? What tools could be helpful for keeping the circle on track? What are the limits of a circle? What have others done?
Who should come?
The day is for families (mothers, fathers, adult brothers and sisters, other relatives) and friends of people with developmental disability. It would be a great idea to bring any prospective circle members with you. Families that include a young person with disability are encouraged to attend.

the practicalities of what a meaningful week could look like

August: It’s back…9 and 10 August 2012 – Parramatta
In October 2007, Family Advocacy hosted a hugely successful conference:
The Odyssey – a journey of enrichment and possibility
Presenters travelled from around Australia and from overseas with the aim of igniting a spark to set people in NSW and beyond on a path of discovery around people with disability having a good life – at all stages of their journey.
Participants heard about real ways in which people with developmental disability can live rich, varied and secure lives; how they can experience positive learning opportunities; be recognised as part of the wider community; have constructive, meaningful work and leisure time; and have a place to call home.
On 9 and 10 August 2012, The Odyssey will continue and build momentum...
Confirmed conference speakers include: Dr Michael Kendrick (www.kendrickconsulting.org), Kathie Snow (www.disabilityisnatural.com) Meg Sweeney, Jane Sherwin, Michael Schweiger (of Vemvane Inc) and more!
More details are available on the Family Advocacy website http://www.family-advocacy.com/conference-2012.html
October October 11 and 17 Positive Directions for Lives of Meaning and Fulfillment Coffs Harbour (October 11) – Nowra (October 17)
Many families have said that they would like their son or daughter with disability to enjoy the same good, ordinary opportunities as their other children but they find this hard to achieve.
This workshop considers why this is so and explores strategies for helping a person with disability to have a good life as part of their community.
These strategies are:
having a positive vision for the future
working not just for community presence but also for community participation and relationships
assisting people to develop and sustain positive roles in their community by ‘looking the part’ and ‘acting the part’.
With NSW Government policy changing to enable people with disability and their families to have more control over their lives, now is a great time to be inspired!
This is a workshop for families and friends of people with developmental disability. Mothers, fathers, adult brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles and other extended family are welcome. If you are thinking about a better future for your family member with disability, then this workshop is for you!
